Council Member Nowakowski Announces Investment for Local Theatre and Entertainment Groups

Buffalo, N.Y. - Fillmore District Council Member Mitchell P. Nowakowski gathered with arts and entertainment leaders today to announce $65,000 in discretionary funding being awarded to several key organizations that contribute to Buffalo’s artistic, cultural, and economic vitality.

The recipients include Shakespeare in Delaware Park, MusicalFare, Alleyway Theatre, Torn Space Theater, and the Chippewa Alliance. The Council Member and the recipients were also joined by Shea’s Performing Arts Center President & CEO Brian Higgins. The announcement was made at a press event in Buffalo’s Plaza of Stars, a symbolic location that celebrates the city’s deep appreciation of the arts.

“Buffalo’s theatre and entertainment organizations are the heartbeat of our creative economy,” said Fillmore District Council Member Mitch Nowakowski. “These groups not only provide incredible programming and world-class performances, but they also activate our neighborhoods, drive foot traffic to small businesses, and make Buffalo a truly vibrant city. By making the arts accessible to all residents, these organizations ensure that people, regardless of circumstance, can experience the transformative power of theatre and entertainment. They are all vital to our city’s cultural legacy and contribute to our bright future, and I am so proud to support their work and ensure they continue to thrive.”

“Investments in theatre and entertainment are investments in the people, places and shared experiences that build a stronger, more connected city,” said Brian Higgins, President & CEO of Shea’s Performing Arts Center. “We are grateful to Council Member Nowakowski for his ongoing support for the arts and energetic leadership in Buffalo.”

Alleyway Theatre Executive Artistic Director Chris Handley said, “Buffalo’s Theatre District wouldn’t shine as bright without champions like Councilmember Nowakowski and his staff. For 46 years, Alleyway has called the Theatre District home, and we are ever-grateful for the support of Mitch and the City of Buffalo. Alleyway develops and produces the American theatre of tomorrow, right here in Buffalo today. This funding helps us protect and maintain our facilities as we continue to produce innovative artistic and educational programming for all of Buffalo’s artists and audiences. We look forward to continuing this great relationship with the Councilman and the City.”

This funding reflects Council Member Nowakowski’s continued commitment to investing in strategic cultural institutions that also drive economic development.
